Horses at Nanango
Waler Data Base @ Facebook. Image: Riders in the Nanago district, Qld. Possibly a muster party, although very neatly turned out. John-Kate Dohl photo.
Some lovely old photos of horses at Nanango and district from John-Kate Dohle’s personal collection, thank you so much!

Only one has been identified but the Nanango History Room may know more if anyone is researching, and they’re on FB. One may be the mail vehicle (coach service, mail also took passengers).

So good to see, incredible how horsey many areas were in those times. Nanango had a very good reputation for working horses, from saddle to harness (light delivery) types.

A few good racehorses came out of Nanango area, and some of the local horses got good prices at Toowoomba sales, as taken there by various buyers/owners, many being auctioned far closer to Brisbane; and were sent to India. Tarong station there mustered their brumbies annually, many broken for station horses, coach horse and India horses.
Half-way house on the coach route between Kannangur (outside Toogoolawah) and Nanango. Formerly a station homestead, it was afterwards a hotel and is now again a simple homestead. The photograph shows the coach stopping to pick up the mailbag from Stonehouse in 1910.
